Upgrade Your Bathroom on a Shoestring Budget

Kitchens and bathrooms are the workhorses of the house. Every member of the family spends time in each room, numerous times a day and over the years both can become worn and drab. Sure, they could use a remodel, but with the average cost of a bathroom remodel at $9,275, you may want to consider a DIY (Do it yourself) makeover instead.

Whether you’re putting your San Diego home on the market or just want to give it a new feel, and a complete bathroom remodel is beyond your budget, take a look at some of the ideas we’ve put together to help you spruce it up without breaking your budget.

Start by cleaning it up:

This is the starting point of knowing exactly what you need to do to upgrade your bathroom. Clean the bathroom from top to bottom. Start by dusting off the light bulbs.  Clear off the counter of everything, including cosmetics, the hair dryer, toothpaste, medicine, bottles and even the decorations. Do you like the decorations? If not, put them away for now. Take down the shower curtain and the liner, remove the throw rugs, and towels. Wash them. Then empty off the walls and clean them.

Paint or cover the walls:

The walls are the second task you tackle after thoroughly cleaning  the bathroom. Paint or cover the walls with something unique and you transform the space. Make a tiny bathroom feel roomier when you move the eye to a certain spot in the room you want to highlight. Paint the walls with a bright color and you will change the feeling in the room. Spread Joint Compound on the walls to add dimension and character.Check out Do it Yourself (DIY) bathroom upgrade ideas on Pinterest to get more ideas for your bathroom. If you plan on selling your home in the near future, a neutral coat of paint will be your best choice. Then accentuate the walls with decorations, add colored towels, a bright shower curtain and rugs to create a clean, fresh look for the buyer. A buyer always wants an upgraded bathroom, especially when they can see how easy it is  to maintain without having to repaint a color they do not like.

Shed Some Light On Your Home:

Replace the light fixture. It will be worth it. Talk to a lighting expert first to discuss the best lighting for your bathroom. Get a fixture that can increase the brightness and can also go dim. Lighting experts recommend attaching lighting sconces to eye-level either, on each side of the mirror or to reflect in the mirror. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, the brighter the bathroom is, the better the buyer will like it. If you have a window in the bathroom, use light curtains or a valance to bring in the light during the day.

Update accessories:

Your budget will determine your new accessories. Find a snappy looking shower curtain and coordinate it with matching towels and rugs. Add a framed mirror, on sale. Replace the toilet with a low-flow one and upgrade the faucets. You have made your bathroom more efficient and easier to maintain. Replace the plastic switch covers for something like an aged bronze or a brushed nickel. Replace the towel racks, door knobs and cabinet handles to match the switch plate; now you have an even more beautiful look. Adorn the walls with artwork that brightens the room or adds depth. Add a candle in a bowl of small river rocks, or get a unique pedestal or holder.

You have now upgraded your bathroom yourself on a shoestring budget. HomeAdvisor reports that most bathroom remodels cost between $5,534 and $13,040. But you did it for less and you get to enjoy the new look and feel every day without feeling guilty about the cost. Buyers love looking at homes that are easy to keep clean, easy to maintain and easy to look at. Buyers will love the care you have taken in the bathroom. Buyers see new and believe the home is well-cared for and less work. They are more likely to want your home over a home that needs minor upgrades to the bathroom.

Repaint or cover the floor:

If you budge allows, you may want to consider doing something new with the floor.Did you know you can save money and time by painting over your bathroom tile rather than putting down a new floor?
